Borders LMC are excited to post on our website what we believe to be the first document of its kind; a document that outlines a collaboration of all Borders GP’s to define the roles and responsibilities of GP’s within NHS Borders.

The development of this document started following a conversation with the Medical Director of NHS Borders and LMC Exec during discussions around interface issues. There was the feeling that some Secondary Care clinicians did not necessarily understand the GP role and the tasks that do and don’t sit within the GP remit. It was felt that the GMS contract detail did not distil clearly into tasks that are the responsibility of GPs and those that are not. Defining the GP role links to the importance issue of making sure GP’s are providing high quality, high value health care to all patients within NHS Borders utilising GP’s skills and precious resources to the best of their ability. By defining the GP role it will be clear to all where responsibilities lie and reduce the time GPs are currently spending completing tasks which are not GP workload and which are currently adding to work load pressure.  With this document, which has been shared with the Medical Director and the Associate Medical Directors, GPs can safely explain to colleagues and patients when we are able to provide a service within General Medical Services and when a request sits out with the GP role and should be completed by the requesting colleague.

This will be a live document and may be subject to alteration by Borders LMC as roles alter over time. You can download the latest version of the document below:
