GMS Contract Update – December 2020
On 2nd December, the Scottish Government and SGPC released the below letter linked on this page. This was seen by many as a bitter-sweet announcement giving GPs some assurances around delivery of the services promised by the new contract whilst confirming that there would be disappointing delays in introducing the essential changes to the way we work. The demands placed on general practice during the Coronavirus pandemic have been immense and sustained for a period of time way beyond our greatest fears at the outset in March 2020. Now, more than ever, our profession needs solid guarantees around the permanent transfer of workload to allow us to focus our skills on leadership, complex clinical care and cohesion of multidisciplinary community teams. Colleagues will note that a failure to transfer the services will invoke a “Transitory Service” arrangement to compensate practices.
This document will at least now allow practices to make workforce plans and projections for the next few years. There will an interesting times ahead whilst we await the updated Memorandum of Understanding and the earnings / expenses data for Phase II.
